Motorcycle rim tape is a great style upgrade for any bike and can really tie the colour scheme of your motorcycle together by matching your rim tape to your decals or paint, adding a real pop to the way your bike looks out on the road, and parked up at shows or meets. Although, the majority of motorcycle rim tapes are not reflective which means their cool appearance will be useless when the sun goes down, which is why most bikers buy only reflective rim tapes, which not only make their bike stand out during the day but also can’t be missed at night by other road users, making them the most versatile and cost effective safety feature money can buy. Reflective rim tape does what the name suggests, it reflects any light that hits it and allows drivers on the road and pedestrians to see your bike moving on the street no matter how dark it gets, which can be a real life saver during those night time rides when some drivers seem to switch off their concentration or simply can’t see a motorcyclist at a junction.
Installing Motorcycle Rim Tape
Always clean the surface of your wheel rim before applying any decal, as it is important that not dirt , grit, grease, or oil is left on the rim as it will prevent the adhesives from binding to the surface.
Some rim tapes will be supplied on a roll, and should be applied using the supplied applicator which is helpful to guide the tape along the rim and ensure that it is properly pressed against the rim allowing the adhesive to stick securely. This type of motorcycle rim tape is more suited to wider wheels and is usually applied on the inner rim face, due to the non-curved construction of the tape, which prevents it from bending around the outer face of your wheel rim.
Pre-curved rim tapes are also available and make applying tape to the outer face of your wheel rim a simple job, thanks to the manufacturers cutting the rim tapes in curved sections at the factory, matching the contour of a wheel. These tapes can be layed on to the rim face and pressed to apply then overlapped slightly, giving you a seamless ring of colour which is guaranteed to make your bike stand out wherever you go.
